Who would pay $10.75 for a snow cone? That was the cost of the strawberry cheesecake paradise, flavor of the week at the Snow Monster stand at West Osage and Indian Warpath Drive on Saturday evening, June 4.
Don’t scoff,. It was a bargain. If ordered a la carte it could have cost $12.50 or more. And people, mostly families, were lined up 25-deep to order the ‘build-your-own’ Snow Monster summer treats,
You had to be patient.
One couple, who allowed me to take a photo of their son, five-year- old Frank Hunter, who ordered a grape Snow Monster with a cotton candy skewer, said the entire process from placing their order to collecting their treats took 45 minutes.
But while they waited in each of the two lines, they were treated to a steam of smiling customers carrying oversized concoctions of New Orleans style saved ice, ice cream, whipped cream and an array of colors so vibrant that would make a rainbow look like a Monet pastel.
If you haven’t seen it yet, Snow Monster is the brightly painted pink and green carnival style trailer parked in the south west corner of the Bu’s Autorama car lot at 2802 West Osage.
If you’re considering a visit, plan time to study the giant menu posted on the side of the trailer. There are four sizes of Snow Monsters, 50 flavors, plus 11 sugar-free flavors, 13 toppings and two choices of skewers. Customers are invited to build their own Snow Monster. Prices are carefully listed next to each item you add to your order.
Cost for a base cup ranges from $2 to $6 with the flavor of the week offered at $10.75. Toppings cost an extra 75 cents to $2.00 each and you can add as many as you want. For another $2.00 the whole thing can be topped with a cotton candy or sour skewer.
Advertising on Fox News in the morning and on Facebook, tie the colorful coolers to a famous city of the far south, describing the Snow Monster as “a taste of New Orleans with delicIous sweat treats, powdery thin shaved ice and tons of specialty Snow Balls.”
In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that this is not offered as an advertisement for these summer dessert concoctions but is intended as a report of the newest sensation in our town. In my humble view, it is a phenomenon worth reporting.
While I was there Saturday evening, more than 80 people were in one of the two lines, first to place their order and second to wait for their name called that their order was filled. Or were seated in ice-cream colored metal chairs around tables topped with equally bright umbrellas that gave the whole thing the ambience of an outdoor. It could be in New Orleans.
Check it out.
We love Snow Monster! It has been open 5 days total. Out of the 5 days we have made a trip up there 3 of them!! The kids love the snowballs and so do us adults! It is not like your typical snowcone. With the ice being a powder it gives you flavor in every bite all the way through! None of that once you drink the flavor your left with a bunch of plain ice. Plus what can be better than a snowball with icecream in the middle!! It’s the best of both worlds when your looking for a sweet treat!!!
