By Pauline Masson – If you have noticed the ultra modern structure tucked into a nook on Hwy OO just north of Interstate 44, you’re seeing a business that is new to Pacific in more ways than you might imagine.
Named The Landing Hub, the bold gray and black structure is a vacation rental that’s bringing new streams of visitors to Pacific from all across the country. Although a few guests have been from the local area, most are from far away places and found The Landing Hub in an online search for a stay near their destination.
From the time plans surfaced for The Landing Hub last year, everywhere I went in the city people were asking, “What is an Airbnb?”
Here’s what it is. Airbnb stands for Air Bed and Breakfast. It is an online hotel booking service that was launched in early 2008 to help travelers book stays in unstaffed hotels, which are a growing trend in the United States and other places around the world.
Since Shane Mayer and Jennifer Blakely opened the modern facility six months ago, traveling athletic teams, family reunions, industrial trainees and wedding parties have found their way to the Landing Hub – and to Pacific.
The day I was there last week, Jennifer was expecting the arrival of 30 female LaCrosse players from Colorado, traveling with two coaches and a bus driver, on their way to a meet at Lindenwood University in St. Charles. The Landing Hub was a great fit for the adults and athletes to have individual rooms, but lots of public space to get together.
The Landing has a maximum capacity of 80 guests at one time and a yacht room that sleeps 20 in bunk beds. Singe rooms with queen size beds are also available.The facility has already been fully booked several times, including 80 guests for a wedding at Haue Valley Wedding Venue on Thornton Road..
The way Airbnb’s work, the girl athletes and their companions might not see Jennifer or a member of her staff. On my visit, she was there to give me a tour, to make certain everything was spic and span clean and to launder bedding and towels used the previous day.
Jennifer and Shane operate a cleaning service in Pacific and consider themselves fanatics when it comes to cleaning. With a staff of three, they clean rooms and public spaces after each guest. And, after concerns about COVID, they spray rooms and public areas with an electrostatic spray to remove any bacteria from the air.
When guests book rooms online they receive a code to the outside door and the door to their room. While staying at The Landing, they have access to a community kitchen and common areas such as the game room, dining area, and living room.
A large room that can be set up for meetings, hosted the Pacific Area Chamber of Commerce Meeting last week.
The Landing Hub might be described as a boutique hotel with a difference. There is no check in desk, no concierge and no room service. The huge dining room offers tables for two or large tables for family style eating.
The facility does provide bedding and towels but no room service. Guests order food from area eateries, or prepare group meals in the huge common kitchen that is equipped with cooking tools, dishes and a dishwasher. Guests are asked to keep counter and table tops clean and place any used dishes in the dishwasher.
Jennifer, who serves on the City of Pacific Tourism Commission, says the Landing Hub plays a unique role not only for travelers but for the recreation and cultural venues in our area.
She has studied the surrounding area and provides maps and brochures that connect guests with outdoor activities, restaurants, wineries, museums, and shopping, within thirty minutes of Pacific.
“People travel for lots of reasons,” Jennifer said. “Once they get to know Pacific in a group friendly hotel, they are likely to stay an extra day or two and to come back.”
