Old friends and new gathered for the perennial Pacific Lions Club pancake breakfast at the Tri-County Senior Center last Sunday.
A crew of Lions arrived at 6:00 a.m. to setup for the event. Lions crew grew to 14. They were joined by six Senior Center volunteers to cook up and serve all-you-can-eat eggs, pancakes, sausages, biscuits and gravy. A youth crew of Scouts and Little Lions (grandchildren of Lions) served beverages, included refills and bused tables.
Placemats identified 32 businesses that endorsed the event. The Tri-County Senior was the co-sponsor of this year’s breakfast.
More than 140 breakfasts were served, including several for first responders.
Pacific Lions, the dean of Pacific service organizations, started this annual feed in the 1930 to raise funds for its program to provide day jobs for friends and neighbors unemployed in the Great Depression.
Lion Myrta Pittman thinks the breakfasts also have a great history.
“The best I can come up with is the breakfast began in 1952 and this year was our 69th breakfast,” Myrta said. “Lots of sausage and eggs and pancakes!! Justin and I have probably worked at least 15 of them. Years ago the breakfast was held at the Lions Club using a propane fired grill to cook the pancakes and the very outdated kitchen at the club. Often the line waiting for a place to sit would stretch out the door onto porch and occasionally down sidewalk. It was and still is a great meeting place for old and new friends, with a chance to visit and catch up.”
In recent years, the event has been held at the Tri-County Senior Center to accommodate crowds too large for the Lions’ building.
