Sewer Rates are Going Up

Beginning in September, city water and sewer users will see an increase in the sewer charges on their bill.

Aldermen approved a 42 percent increase in sewer rates at the July 20 board meeting.

The current volume charge is $ 2.92 per thousand gallons of water, or fraction thereof. The new sewer rate will be $4.14 per thousand gallons of water that enters the structure, or fraction thereof.

The increase amounts to a monthly increase of $ 6.10 for a 5,000 gallon user. At the current rate a 5,000 gallon user pays $14.60. With the proposed increase a 5,000 gallon user would pay $20.70.

The monthly minimum charge ($12.57) is proposed to remain the same.

Officials say the increase is necessary to to provide funds needed to pay for upgrades and expenses associated with the City’s Sewer System.

The new rates go into effect for the billing period beginning on August 20.

Pauline, I always enjoy your comments although the hike in sewer bill rates was not welcome. Seems a little excessive all at once??? Miss seeing you at Chamber events.
